What to say when a recruiter sends you a SPAM message

I covered why you should stand up for yourself and other engineers when receiving a spam post from a recruiter here.  Here are some templates of what you can say to respond to a recruiters untargeted cold outreach:

Template 1: Stop SPAMMING.

NAME,

I don’t respond to spray & pray recruiter messages, and I’m not looking for work right now. You’d know that if you read my profile or customized your outreach in any way before hitting send. Now you’re out 1 LinkedIn recruiter credit and I’m out the last 45 seconds of my life.

Womp Womp,
Kevin

Template 2: What you’re doing is hurtful to the ecosystem.

NAME,

Actually, it does hurt to “reach out”.  Especially when you don’t customize your outreach to my skills or background at all. Spray and pray marketing messages like yours dilute the value of LinkedIn, create distrust for recruiters among engineers, and they are disrespectful of both my and your time. Read my profile before sending a message next time.

Template 3: Polite but firm.

NAME,

As my profile says, I’m not considering any opportunities of the type you are offering.  Please read before sending next time. Good luck with your search.

Best, Kevin
