If you are sent a text or iMessage, your iPhone will by default alert you of the message *twice*. This is often unnecessary, and many users find it annoying. To turn off repeat text alerts<

Open the Settings app.
Go to ‘Notifications’
Go to ‘Messages’.
Tap ‘Repeat Alert’. Set them to ‘Never’.
